Your Inner Game and Its Outcomes

With the NHL Playoffs right around the corner we wanted to share a powerful message from ex-NHL player and author, Ryan Walter. Ryan's message is a great reminder about how our inner game vastly affects our results and outcomes around us. We must master the battlefield of our minds!

Why does a heightened awareness of the end change our outcomes?

How does the NHL trade deadline help your Team Win in Playoffs or in Business?

The NHL Trade Deadline is over for another season; you and I survived it again!

When I was playing in the NHL, the Trade Deadline date vacillated in importance to me. If my offence appeared to have dried up by that point in the season, I seemed to hear more rumors of being traded as the big day loomed, but even when I felt pretty secure with my team, Trade Deadline day still created some anxious moments. WHY?

At the end of the day, those fears were rather silly. I could have been traded at any other time of the season; why was Trade Deadline day any different? For the same reason that the final 2 minutes of offense in the NFL produce 3 times as many touch downs… both create a heightened awareness of the END!

The same is true of overtime, playoffs, and especially overtime in playoffs! All of these situations result in increased intensity. This heightened awareness that the END could come soon, if handled properly, should actually increase our performance, not our anxiety. What does a heightened awareness of the end affect? It affects our thoughts, of course. This brings us back to a concept that I have emphasized many times, both in my e-newsletters and when I have spoken publicly:

We become what we think about, most of the time.

Just a quick aside, any time I speak to Corporate Groups or Not-for-Profit groups around these topics of thought-process or belief-system or increasing will-power, they all love these subjects. I am sensing that there is an incredible need in today's high pressured world to better understand the Inner Game that supplies our Outer Performance.

The following story by an unknown author emphasizes the extent to which our thinking affects our actions:

He stood on the side of the road and cried: “Buy a hot dog Mister?” People bought. He increased his meat and bun orders. He bought a bigger stove to take care of his trade. His son finally arrived home from college to help him out, but then something happened. His son said, "Father, haven't you been listening to the radio and watching TV? There's a big depression. The foreign situation is terrible. The domestic situation is worse." The father thought, "Well, my son's been to college, he listens to the radio and watches TV and he ought to know." So the father reduced his meat and bun orders, took down his signs, cancelled his newspaper ads, and no longer bothered to stand on the highway to sell his hot dogs. His hot dog sales fell, almost overnight. "You're right, son" the father said to the boy. "We certainly are in the middle of a great depression."

What we choose to think about creates the context in which we live our lives.

For a more positive illustration of the strong connection between our thoughts and actions, the film, Man on Wire, documents Philippe Petit’s high-wire walk between the Twin Towers in New York City on the morning of August 7, 1974. On that morning a solitary man reached beyond his limits to achieve what he had defined as “impossible.” As Petit planned his adventure, he said: “It’s impossible sure. So let’s start working on it….. If you want something, nothing is impossible.” His words revealed how he had chosen to live his life – one filled with purpose and excitement; one during which he would continually push his limits to find everything within himself. That morning, as he took his first steps onto the wire, the people nearby noticed a certain trepidation and uncertainty in his demeanor. His steps were cautious. The intensity of his focus could be seen in his eyes and the cautiousness of his steps. Then, as if a magic wand had been waived, there was a sudden change as tranquility filled his expression. He had gone deep within himself and found a serenity and peace. At that beautiful moment Petit knew with absolute certainty that he could and would be magnificent that day, that he would accomplish his goal. Now nothing would hold him back as he performed.

Of his experience Petit said: “Life should be lived on the edge of life. You have to exercise rebellion: to refuse to tape yourself to rules, to refuse your own success, to refuse to repeat yourself, to see every day, every year, every idea as a true challenge - and then you are going to live your life on a tightrope.” By contrast, another tight rope walker, this one a professional for many years, suffered a tragic end.

In 1978 Karl Wallenda fell to his death in downtown San Juan, Puerto Rico while doing what he did for a living, traversing wires. Mrs. Wallenda recalled, “All Karl thought about for 3 months prior to it… was falling. It was the first time he’d ever thought about it, and it seemed to me that he put all his energies into not falling rather than walking the tightrope.” Both these stories demonstrate how profoundly our thinking directly influences our performance.

Back to Trade Deadline day or sudden death overtime - why don't they call it "sudden life"? or NHL playoffs, or crunch time in business. The real culprit increasing our anxiety is our mind at work imagining what might happen. Conversely, our best performance comes from the increased intensity to be gained by focusing our thoughts, not on potential outcomes, but on enjoying the journey and executing the process that gives us our desired outcome.

One slight adjustment in our focus, in the context that we create, in what we choose to think about… increases our performance, not our anxiety. And that makes all the difference.

If your business needs an adjustment of focus, give us a call. We're here to help!

Have a great week unless you choose otherwise.

Success Profile

This week's success profile is Vancouver Giants color commentator, Bill Wilms and BC Golf News Editor, Barry Sharpe.

After years of talking and planning they have launched a new website and radio program called, The Christian Athlete: My Story.

The new radio program airs on 10 radio stations throughout Western Canada on the Golden West Radio Network. The program is designed to interview different athletes and give you a glimpse into their lives, careers, backgrounds and share their stories about their lives and faiths.

Being a Christian and an ex-hockey player I found Bill and Barry's project very inspiring and I hope you will enjoy listening to the different stories of some very well-known athletes.

Here is a great interview with Vancouver Canucks player - Dan Hamhuis
