This week we share a powerful message from Julio Melara. Julio's message is a great reminder about a common denominator that is shared by anyone who achieves success and that is the GRIT to carry on when difficulties and obstacles arrive.

We all know that adversity is not prejudice.  It visits all of us.  Life can be tough, business can be hard-hitting and success comes with lots of obstacles. What separates those who can hold their own and keep going in times of adversity is a cluster of habits that center on grit.  Grit is “stick-to-itness;” a diligent spirit; the nagging conviction that keeps you pressing on when it’d be easier to give up.  Grit is the realization that achieving one’s greatest potential comes from running a marathon, not a sprint.

Grit means having the courage, resolve, fortitude and determination to not give up in face of obstacles and adversity. We aren’t born with it–it’s a habit you can develop, a skill you learn. And it’s absolutely essential to keep growing, succeeding and flourishing at work and in life.

Today I want to share with you three habits displayed by people with grit:

1. They don’t listen to negative voices in their heads.

People with grit understand that arrows of doubt, unbelief and negativity will cross their mind, but they don’t allow those thoughts to stay there. People with grit are optimistic and believe in their ability to overcome any problems. In challenging times, a person with grit will look for the positive and immediately search for solutions. They don’t blame, complain, whine or dwell on the problem but are solution oriented and look forward to the future.

2. They know how to bounce back.

People with grit know how bounce back. Knowing how to bounce back from adversity and life’s challenges is so important in the journey of life. Grit is what makes you get back on the horse after you’ve been kicked off. It’s something any of us can do–we just need to learn how. Tough-minded and determined people will not allow life’s circumstances to push them down and hold them under.

3. They confront their fears of failure.

hether you’re in athletics, business, politics, ministry or academia, everyone experiences failure at some point and encounters some level of challenge. For a person with grit, if something is valuable enough to them, they are willing to risk experiencing some amount of failure in order to achieve their goal.

The truth is if you want to become excellent at anything, be it sales, leadership, public speaking, healthy eating, money management, organization, or even your marriage, you must commit to avoiding distractions and persevering when challenges arise. This is where grit comes into play.  And yes, talent, intelligence, and being at the right place at the right time may all play some role in achieving success, but it is really the quality of being gritty that will prove to be most critical on your quest. There really is no way around it: working hard is necessary if you want to get what you want. The good news is that being gritty can be learned, and there are at least two things we can do to teach this characteristic to ourselves:

Learn to FOCUS:  In other words, Manage your distractions. We all have things in our life that pull us away from what really matters. Whether it’s social media, television, our bad habits, or an unhealthy relationship, they all offer us early rewards without lasting value. Discover what most commonly distracts you, determine what small reward it’s offering you, and in your moments of temptation, remind yourself of the greater reward that you are trying to achieve in realizing your ultimate goal. We live in times that we must FIGHT for our FOCUS.

Create a Success MINDSET: We all know that success does not just land itself on the laps of those who are privileged, blessed, or lucky. Talent is earned; if you desire it, you must work for it. It’s one of the greatest gift’s my mother gave me as young man. She helped me and my siblings develop a strong work ethic.  Most of us in America can have, most of what we desire; a good marriage, success in business, healthy life, nice home, good relationships, etc.…. if we understand, we will have to work for it and on it all the days of our lives.

If your business needs marketing that works, give us a call. We're here to help!

Be blessed this week.
