Win The Battle on the Inside!

This week we share a powerful message from author and speaker, Julio Melara. We are sure you all have heard “as you think on the inside so it will be on the outside”. We all know it’s better to be positive than negative, Julio’s message gives us 5 mindsets to think about that will help us personally and professionally.

I just finished having a conversation with my son regarding his mindset.  For years now all three of my children have heard me say, “if you win the battle on the inside, you will win the battle on the outside.”  My twin sons just made seventeen years old and are still processing and figuring out the words they have heard over the last decade. This got me thinking about how our mindset is the key to everything we do in life.

Possibly more than any other single factor, your mindset determines your success. What you think is what you become. Internal dialogue--the ongoing conversation we all have with our mindset--is the driving force behind every success story, and also behind every failure.  Research confirms that 80% of an individual’s success is based on their psychology.  The difference between who you are and who you want to be stems from your mindset.  Once you start to change your mindset, you will immediately start to change your behavior.  Today I want to share five mindsets that will enhance and improve your life.

1. Positive Mindset

Choosing to be positive and having a good attitude will determine a lot about your life. If you set your mind to positivity it can go a long way.  The cool thing about developing and having a positive attitude and mindset is that it’s all up to you.  You can’t be passive and be positive.  You have to be intentional.  Instead of giving yourself reasons why you can't or shouldn't, give yourself reasons why you can and permission to go for it.  Happiness doesn't come from circumstances but always from within.  Make sure you check your negative beliefs at the door.  Your beliefs influence your outer behaviors and actions, meaning you need to believe you can succeed before you actually do.  The truth is when you have a strong will to succeed, you’ll naturally direct your focus toward solutions rather than problems.  If your beliefs about yourself and your ability to hit your goals are negative, it’s almost impossible to achieve what you set out to do.

Think about it like this.  Imagine you want to sell a product or service.  If you don’t believe in what you’re selling or doing, then why would the client buy it?  Now, if you started the conversation believing in yourself and the value of what you are selling, then the potential client would feel it too.  Your approach, communication and body movement change.  This is the ultimate mind shift.

2. Learning/Growth Mindset

Just because you are struggling, that doesn't mean you're not learning.  Every failure has something to teach you, and everything you learn helps you grow.  If you are unwilling to learn, no one can help you; if you are determined to learn, no one can stop you.  In her book, Mindset: Changing the Way You Think to Fulfill Your Potential, Stanford University Psychologist Dr. Carol S. Dweck explains that successful people focus on growth.

A growth mindset arises from the belief that achieving success is about continuous, consistent improvement.  If you focus on growth, you see success as a journey rather than a destination.  This means you’re always open to learning and improving until you achieve your goals.  Remember, every great success requires some kind of struggle, and good things really do come to those who work hard and struggle to pursue their goals they believe in.  To radically change your life, you have to change yourself.  Start building your new mindset today--think the thoughts that will help you move toward your goals.

3. Goal-setting Mindset

Setting goals is essential for getting ahead.  They give you direction and they give you purpose. Unfortunately, not everyone has bought into this.  Out of the 7 billion people on this earth, they say only 3% of adults actually write down their goals.  If you’re sitting in the group of people who have written down their goals, congratulations, you’re already ahead of the majority!

Remember, knowing what you want and willing yourself to reach it are two different things.  When you know your goals, they motivate you.  If it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you.  Set high goals and don't stop until you reach them.

4. Patient Mindset

This one is big. It caused me lots of pain when I was young and early in my career because I was impatient.  There's a fine line between moving forward and standing still.  The most successful people do all they can to move forward, but they also have the patience to wait and watch.  We live in a world today where everyone wants instant success, money, achievement and accolades.  People are looking to be rich overnight or have success without paying a price and life simply doesn’t work this way.  Those who are impatient tend to lose out on great opportunities.  Sometimes you have to wait for the right thing.

5. Focused Mindset

One of the worst setbacks that can happen is losing focus and allowing procrastination to step in.  Important as it is, it's difficult to be focused and disciplined.  The best way is to stay in the here and now and to concentrate on everything going on in this particular moment.  Distraction wastes time, and procrastination keeps you from moving forward.  Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment, and a mindset of focus builds that bridge.  Some of you just need to get rid of distractions and unclutter your mind of things that are not important or are irrelevant so you can focus.
