Optimism!

This week we share a powerful message from author and speaker, Julio Melara. With all the negativity and craziness going on around us locally and globally we felt Julio’s message would be a timely reminder that we all could use a reminder to practice and focus on optimism!

When you think about predictors of success, lots of traits come to mind, including intelligence, drive, work ethic and discipline—just to name a few. And while all these qualities contribute to your success, there’s one less expected characteristic that may play a bigger role in career success than any other trait: optimism!

When you hear the word optimism, what comes to mind? Does it resonate as a tried-and-true life practice? Or does it sound too Pollyanna-ish for your taste?
Optimism is essentially hopefulness about the future, a general belief that things will work out in your favor. The truth is because  optimistic people have a positive outlook about the future, they’re inclined to work harder to achieve their goals, so they can realize the bright future they’re envisioning. Because of this, optimism breeds success; it acts as a self-fulfilling prophecy.  By cultivating optimism, you can boost success for yourself and those you lead. This coupled with the right skills, relationships and education will help you achieve your goals.

Today I want to share six benefits of optimism:

1 Optimism allows you to see (and seize) opportunities

Because they’re confident about the future, optimists see opportunities where others don’t. They have faith in their abilities, so rather than being inhibited by self-doubt and fear, they see unlimited possibilities. They’re not discouraged by the obstacles they encounter along the way, either. Instead, they see new challenges as opportunities. This gives them courage to embark on new career endeavors and adventures, enabling them to reach their full potential.

2 Optimism makes you a more effective leader

Optimistic people have a positive mindset! Their energy and enthusiasm is inspiring. When you’re around people with a positive attitude, it’s contagious.  This is one reason why optimists make great leaders—they instill confidence in those around them. They’re also not discouraged by difficulties and obstacles. It’s inevitable that everyone will encounter a bumps along the way in their career, but optimists set themselves apart by staying focused on their goals. Since they don’t get overwhelmed by every challenge they stumble upon, they effectively lead teams by encouraging them to persevere in the face of adversity.

3 Optimism fuels creative thinking and innovation

All of our minds get bombarded with arrows of doubt, fear and worry.  But, when thinking about the future, optimists aren’t constrained by negative thoughts. This allows them to stay open-minded, and ignites creative thinking!

4 Optimism decreases negative emotions

Optimists experience less depression and anxiety, and optimistic explanatory style can alleviate depression and help prevent relapses. According to psychologist Martin Seligman, depression is often accompanied by a pessimistic explanatory style: we tend to blame ourselves for misfortune, believe it’s permanent, and believe it affects all areas of life. In contrast, optimism brings a sense of hope and confidence, and with it less despair and hopelessness.

5 Optimism helps us cope with life better

Optimists cope better with stress and take more direct action in the face of adversity. When something bad happens, their habitually positive habits of thinking kick in and they look for ways the situation isn’t as bad as they thought and things will get better. “Optimism and hope relate to how we think and feel about the future. If we really do believe that things will work out for the best, all the setbacks become easier to deal with."

6 Optimism Builds Resilience

It allows us to keep our goals and dreams in play so we can act on the motivation to keep working toward them. Because of this, optimistic people feel more in control of their situations and have higher self-esteem.

Next time I’ll share some keys to becoming more optimistic. In the meantime, make it a positive and profitable week unless you choose otherwise!

Be blessed this week.
