5 Ideas That Changed My Life
This week we share a powerful message from author and thought leader, Sahil Bloom. Sahil shares 5 great truths that are worth reflecting on personally and professionally.

1. True balance is about seasons, not days.
The idea of "balance" has been hijacked.
You've been led to believe that your life should always feel balanced on a micro daily basis—that you should have a perfect balance of work, health, family, and personal time.
This leads to a lot of stress and anxiety when your life starts to feel dislocated from that aspirational reality.
Fortunately, I've come to realize that balance is much better found and understood on the macro seasonal basis.
The reality is that life is filled with challenging, painful tradeoffs and sacrifices, and if you want extraordinary results, you need to be willing to contribute extraordinary inputs.
You will have seasons of unbalance that are a necessary cost of entry for the future seasons of balance on the other side.
2. Each area of life exists on a dimmer switch.
Traditional wisdom contends that each area of your life—work, relationships, health, etc.—exists on an On-Off Switch. It would say that you can have one or two areas flipped on at any point, and that the others have to be flipped off.
The problem with this mindset in practice is that if one remains off for too long, it can never be turned on again:
- If you don’t invest in your relationships in your 20s and 30s, you won’t have them in your 40s
- If you don’t invest in your health in your 40s and 50s, you won’t have it in your 60s
- If you don’t take care of your mind in your 60s and 70s, you won’t have it in your 80s
Fortunately, you don't need to accept that self-limiting, dangerous mindset.
The new mindset: Each area of your life exists on a Dimmer Switch.
As you prioritize and focus on one area during the present season of your life, you can turn the dimmer down low on the others (rather than shutting them off). That means continuing to do the tiny daily actions in those areas.
Remember: Anything above zero compounds.
With this simple shift, you can win the present season's battle and avoid losing sight of the multi-season war.
3. You are a time billionaire.
One billion seconds is about 30 years.
When you’re young, you’re a time billionaire—literally rich with time. At age twenty, you probably have about two billion seconds left (assuming you live to eighty). By fifty, just one billion seconds remain.
Unfortunately, we spend most of our lives playing a game where everything we do is in anticipation of some future state.
"When I get X, then I'll be happy."
It’s natural, but it’s a dangerous game—one that we will lose, eventually.
Time is our most precious asset and the present is all that’s guaranteed. Spend it wisely, with those you love, in ways you’ll never regret.
4. Focus on the questions, not the answers.
The greatest discoveries in life come not from finding the right answers but from asking the right questions.
The right question at the right time has the potential to change your life:
- See the world through a different lens
- Evaluate your dilemma from a new angle
- Uncover your blind spots and incorrect assumptions
- Expose your self-limiting beliefs
The answers you seek are found in the questions you avoid.
Focus on the questions, sit with the questions, and the answers will reveal themselves in time.
5. We all need to take that leap of faith.
In Christopher Nolan’s 2010 science-fiction thriller Inception, there is a scene in which the protagonist, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, is faced with the life-and-death decision of whether to trust a new potential benefactor and seize the challenge presented to him.
It is a challenge with the highest possible stakes: the opportunity to return home to his children, whom he hasn’t seen in years.
The benefactor, played by Ken Watanabe, seems to sense his counterpart’s call to adventure and poses a single, powerful question:
"Do you want to take a leap of faith? Or become an old man, filled with regret, waiting to die alone?"
My life—my entire story—is the result of a leap of faith.
I am living my dream life because I embraced a better way—I measured the right things, I took the right actions, and I created the right outcomes. I embraced the concepts in The 5 Types of Wealth.
I’m sure I gave up money by leaving the track I was on, but as far as I’m concerned, I’m the wealthiest man on the face of the earth.
Now it’s time for you to do the same...
