Leading From The Bench

In hockey, leadership isn’t just about who’s wearing the “C” or who is the most vocal in the dressing room or on the ice for the last minute of a game.

I’ve seen numerous games turn around because of the energy, encouragement, and special effort of a so called role player who had a major effect on the outcome of a game.

Check Out Our Video Of The Week – Beyond The Mammogram  (this is one of our clients that’s is changing the game for breast cancer detection, worth a listen too)

I remember being healthy scratched for a game early in my pro career. I wasn’t happy about it—but I decided I could still be valuable and that this would be a key lesson for me in how to be a great teammate rather than one who pouted and made it about themselves.

I studied the opponent’s plays and tactics and shared those observations with my teammates and coaches, kept key stats my coaches wanted to know about in between periods and encouraged my teammates every chance I got.

That night, we won—and more than one teammate told me they appreciated my encouragement and observations and that taught me I could still contribute to help my team even though I wasn’t on the ice.

In business, it’s the same. Sometimes you’re the one executing the plan; sometimes you’re supporting the ones who are.

And in life, there are seasons when you’re in the spotlight and seasons when you’re behind the scenes. Both matter.

True leadership is influence, not position.

Faith Perspective

When our son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, there were moments when my wife carried the heavier load—especially in the first months of learning everything.

In those moments, my role wasn’t to take over, but to support her in ways that mattered: handling logistics, encouraging her, and praying for strength over our family.

That’s leadership from the bench.

This Week's Challenge: Lead Without the Spotlight

- Identify one situation where you're not "on the ice" right now. Ask, "How can I make someone else's role easier today?"

- Give intentional encouragement -- a text, call, or face to face moment that lifts someone up.

- Pray for someone else's success before your own.

If your business needs marketing that works, give us a call. We're here to help!

Have a great day unless you chose otherwise!

Quote of the Week

Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

Word of the Week

Euphemism (yoo-fuh-miz-um): a mild or pleasant word or phrase that is used instead of one that is unpleasant or offensive.

EG: The HR department advises using the euphemism “let go” instead of saying that someone was fired.

Proverb of the Week

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

(Proverbs 11 verse 2 The Bible)
