What The Dressing Room Taught Me About Leadership
When people think about leadership in hockey, they often picture the captain wearing the “C,” the player scoring the winning goal, or the coach behind the bench calling the shots.
But some of the most important lessons about leadership I’ve ever learned didn’t happen on the ice—they happened in the locker room.
The locker room is a unique place. It’s where players prepare, regroup, and recover. It’s where raw emotions surface after a tough loss, and where energy builds before a big game.
And it’s in those moments that I learned: leadership isn’t about titles—it’s about trust.
Check Out This Weeks Video Of The Week - John Harbaugh (Baltimore Ravens) Servant Leadership

Lesson 1: Leadership Is About Listening
In the locker room, I saw leaders who didn’t always speak first. Instead, they listened—really listened—to their teammates. They paid attention to body language, frustration, or the silence of a teammate struggling with doubt.
Then, when they did speak, their words carried weight because they were rooted in understanding.
In business, I’ve seen the same principle. A leader who listens builds trust. And when people feel heard, they give their best.
Lesson 2: Leadership Is About Presence
Some of the best leaders in the locker room weren’t the loudest—they were the most consistent.
You could count on them to show up on time, work hard, and set the standard. Their presence spoke louder than any pep talk.
As a coach, I’ve tried to model this with my players. Kids don’t just need instruction; they need examples.
They learn leadership not only from what I say, but from how I carry myself when things get tough.
Lesson 3: Leadership Is About Lifting Others
I’ll never forget teammates who encouraged me after a tough shift or celebrated me when I made a good play.
They didn’t just care about their own performance—they lifted the whole team.
True leadership isn’t about making yourself look good—it’s about making the people around you better.
That’s as true in the locker room as it is in the office, at home, or in our communities.
Faith Perspective: Servant Leadership
The Bible reminds us in Mark 10:45 that even Jesus came not to be served, but to serve.
That’s the model of leadership I’ve seen play out in the locker room: leaders who put others first, who sacrifice, who serve.
Whether it was encouraging a rookie, holding a teammate accountable, or simply showing love in action,
I’ve come to believe the best leaders are servant leaders.
This Week's Challenge: Lead Like You're in the Locker Room
1 - Listen before you lead. Ask a teammate, co-worker, or family member how they’re really doing.
2 - Be consistent. Show up on time, give your best effort, and let your example speak.
3 - Lift someone up. Encourage one person this week in a way that gives them confidence to keep going.
4 - Serve first. Look for one small way to put someone else’s needs ahead of your own.
Leadership isn’t about being out front all the time. It’s about building trust, showing up, and serving others—just like the best leaders I learned from in the locker room.
