Building Like a Craftsman
In my playing days, I had a lot of teammates who showed up, did their job, and went home. They were good players — solid, dependable — but there was a difference between those guys and the ones who played with passion, pride, and purpose.
The ones who went beyond being players — they were craftsmen.

It’s the same in business, coaching, or family life. Anyone can show up. Anyone can go through the motions. But greatness doesn’t come from checking the box — it comes from putting your heart and soul into what you do.
A carpenter can build a house. But a craftsman builds something that lasts — something with care, detail, and love.
When I look back on my hockey career, I realize that’s what I was striving to become. I wasn’t the most talented guy on the ice, but I cared deeply about the game, about my teammates, and about getting better every single day.
I studied the details, I worked on my weaknesses, and I took pride in every shift.
That mindset carried over into my business career and coaching as well.
It’s easy to show up and do enough to get by. It’s much harder to pour your heart into every play, every meeting, every interaction.
But that’s what separates the average from the excellent — and the excellent from the exceptional.
I once heard a story about Steve Jobs and how his father taught him the value of craftsmanship. When building a fence, his dad used the same quality of wood and precision on the back of the fence — the part no one would ever see — as he did on the front.
When Steve asked why, his dad said, “Because you’ll know.” That stuck with me.
In hockey, that’s how you approach practice. Nobody sees those early mornings or extra drills — but you know.
In business, that’s how you approach your clients — doing more than what’s expected because it’s the right thing to do. And in faith, that’s how you build character — doing what’s right when nobody’s watching.
There’s a Greek word I love — Meraki. It means to do something with love, creativity, and soul. To leave a piece of yourself in your work.
That’s what being a craftsman is all about.
When I coach young players now, I tell them, “Don’t just play hockey — build something with it.
Build your character, your discipline, your resilience.
Leave something behind.”
Whatever you’re building — whether it’s a business, a family, a career, or a legacy — do it with Meraki.
Put your love and faith into it.
Leave a piece of yourself in everything you do.
Create something that lasts — something that reflects who you are and what you believe.
Because in the end, the true masterpiece isn’t what you build.
It’s who you become in the process.
If your business needs marketing that works, give us a call. We're here to help!
Have a great day unless you chose otherwise!
