Do You Need a Bigger Pond?
One of the greatest truths I’ve learned throughout my journey — from signing with the New York Rangers, to rebuilding my business after setbacks, to coaching young hockey players, and walking my family through some of life’s toughest moments — is this:
Every new level requires a new cost of entry.
Everyone wants the breakthrough.
Everyone wants the next chapter.
Everyone wants the growth.
But not everyone wants to pay the price that growth demands — because the real price isn’t physical… It’s emotional. It’s psychological. It’s personal.

THE SMALL POND PROBLEM
I recently read something about the Frog Pond Effect, and it made me think about my own life, my hockey journey, and the kids I coach.
The idea is simple:
A frog feels big in a small pond. Put that same frog in a bigger pond… and suddenly it feels small. Nothing changed about the frog — only its surroundings.
That’s exactly how players feel when they move up a level:
They were the best last year… Then suddenly they’re fighting just to keep up. They think something is wrong with them. But the truth is simple:
The pond changed. They didn’t.
The same thing happens to us in life, business, leadership, faith, and personal growth. The small pond feels good. But it limits you. It keeps you safe, but it keeps you stuck.
THE COST OF ENTRY
Every time I stepped into a bigger pond in my life, I felt the growing pains:
Feeling like the least experienced
Battling imposter syndrome
Getting humbled by people ahead of me
Being uncomfortable as a beginner again
Questioning whether I belonged
I’ve felt it in hockey locker rooms.
I’ve felt it in the boardroom.
I’ve felt it as a coach.
I’ve felt it rebuilding a business when everything seemed uncertain.
But here’s what I know: The pain you feel when you step into a bigger pond is evidence that you’re on the right path.
It means you’re stretching. It means you’re growing. It means God is preparing you for more.
We pray for growth, but then resist the process that brings it. Growth comes with a cost — but the reward is worth it.
THE GOOD NEWS
Every major breakthrough in my life came AFTER I stepped out of the small pond:
Leaving home to chase the NHL dream
Building and rebuilding a business
Coaching kids and pushing them to levels they didn’t think were possible
Trusting God through family adversity
Choosing courage instead of comfort
None of it was easy. But all of it was worth it.
If you’re feeling uncomfortable right now, GOOD. It’s a sign you’re entering deeper water.
Ask yourself one honest question: Do I need a bigger pond?
Where in your life have you grown too comfortable? Where are you coasting? Where have you stopped being stretched?
Choose ONE area — just one — where you know you’ve outgrown the small pond. Then take a bold step toward deeper water.
This is the cost of entry for the life you’re meant to live.
Pay it with pride.
Pay it with purpose.
Pay it knowing God is preparing you for the next level.
You've got more in you. It’s time to go find the bigger pond.
If your business needs marketing that works, give us a call. We're here to help!
Have a great day unless you chose otherwise!
