The Unseen Mile: What Really Builds Us
This week, I want to talk about something every athlete, entrepreneur, parent, coach, and leader experiences — but few people ever acknowledge.
The unseen mile.
Check Out Our Video Of The Week – I Will Win!

We all celebrate the finish line. We see the contract signings, the championships, the promotions, the business wins, the highlight reels.
But we rarely talk about the miles traveled in the dark… the miles no one applauds… the miles that make or break us.
I’ve had plenty of those in my life.
When people hear I signed with the New York Rangers, they don’t see the unseen miles behind it — the early mornings sharpening skates in empty rinks, the bus rides after tough losses, the practices where I questioned if I was good enough. Later in life, when I built a business and watched it collapse overnight during tough economic times, nobody saw the private moments when I had to dig deep and choose not to quit.
And when my son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at just four years old, that season came with unseen miles as well — long nights, fear-filled questions, trying to be strong when inside I felt anything but. Step by step, as a family, we walked through it. Our faith carried us when our strength wasn’t enough.
Those are the miles that build you. Those are the miles that shape your character. Those are the miles that define the journey.
WHERE CHARACTER IS FORGED
We love the victory moment — the trophy being lifted or the scoreboard flashing in your favor. But character is built somewhere else.
In sports, the unseen mile is the ice time no one watches. The conditioning skates that push you to your limit. The moments you stay late after practice to work on a weakness.
In business, it’s the quiet persistence when a deal falls through or when you’re rebuilding from scratch.
In coaching, it’s showing up for kids who need encouragement on days when your own tank feels empty.
In life, it’s choosing faith over fear when the odds feel overwhelming.
These aren't glamorous miles. They're not Instagram-worthy. But they’re the ones that make us who we are.
HOW TO KEEP GOING WHEN NO ONE’S WATCHING
1 - Embrace the Process — Victory isn’t a moment; it’s built in the thousands of steps leading up to it.
2 - Cultivate Discipline — Some days you feel motivated. Most days you don’t. Show up anyway.
3 - Practice Gratitude — Even during our hardest seasons — and I’ve lived a few — there are moments of grace. Acknowledge them.
4 - Follow Your Inner Compass — Your values are the guideposts. Don’t chase approval. Chase purpose.
5 - Remember Your Why — Your why becomes your fuel. Mine has always been family, faith, and the desire to give back through coaching and mentorship.
YOUR UNSEEN MILES MATTER
What you do in the dark is what earns you the light.
Think about your own unseen miles:
What battles have you fought quietly?
What challenges have you overcome without applause?
What small, consistent steps have carried you forward?
Celebrate them. Honor them. Those unseen miles have made you stronger, more resilient, and more prepared for the road ahead.
Every step — seen or unseen — is moving you closer to the person you’re becoming.
Keep pushing. Keep believing. Your finish line is coming.
If your business needs marketing that works, give us a call. We're here to help!
Have a great day unless you chose otherwise!
