The Pursuit Of Excellence
This week we share a message about something that shaped my life from a very young age—the pursuit of excellence.
As a hockey player growing up, my coaches pushed us hard. Not just to win games, but to pursue excellence in how we trained, how we prepared, and how we carried ourselves mentally and physically.
They reminded us constantly that talent might get you noticed, but excellence is what keeps you moving forward.
When you look up the word *excellence*, the dictionary defines it as: “the state of excelling; the quality of being outstanding.”
But in real life, excellence is something much deeper than a definition.
Check Out Our Video Of The Week - What Does Excellence Mean To You

Excellence is a decision.
It’s a decision to give your best even when no one is watching. It’s choosing growth over comfort. It’s refusing to settle for “good enough.”
I believe every one of us is born with the seed of greatness inside of us. We are all capable of becoming far more than we often believe.
But somewhere along the way many people begin listening to what the world says. They start lowering the standard. They begin settling.
Yet few things in life are more satisfying than looking back and realizing you became more than you thought possible.
That’s the reward of pursuing excellence.
And along my own journey, I’ve learned a few principles that keep that pursuit alive—personally and professionally.
1. Believe in Yourself First
Every journey toward excellence begins with belief.
If you don’t believe in yourself, it becomes very difficult for anyone else to believe in you.
Belief doesn’t mean you think you’re perfect. It means you trust that you were created with purpose and potential.
My mother gave me one of the greatest gifts a parent can give a child—the gift of belief. She believed in me before I ever fully believed in myself. That belief carried me through hard seasons and big challenges.
Never forget: God didn’t create you by accident. You were given gifts that only you can use. Excellence starts when you decide to use them.
2. Stay Hungry. Keep Learning.
Excellence is not a destination—it’s a lifelong pursuit.
No matter how much success someone achieves, the best among us stay students of the game. In hockey, we practiced constantly: hours on the ice, hours off the ice, always working to sharpen the details.
The same principle applies in business, leadership, parenting—everything that matters.
They say it takes about 10,000 hours of focused effort to master something. But the truth is, even after 10,000 hours, there’s always another level if you’re willing to learn and keep building.
One of my mentors once told me, “The moment you think you have arrived is the moment you have departed.”
Stay coachable. Stay curious. Stay hungry.
3. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone
Growth rarely happens where things feel easy.
Comfort zones are comfortable for a reason—they feel safe. But they also keep us the same.
Every meaningful step forward in my life happened when I stepped into something that felt uncomfortable: trying out for a tougher level, taking on a new responsibility, leading when it would have been easier to stay quiet.
When you step outside your comfort zone, you stretch your capacity. And the moments when you feel most uncomfortable are often the moments when you’re growing the most.
If you want excellence, you can’t always choose what feels easiest. You choose what makes you better.
4. Surround Yourself with Excellent People
The people around you shape the person you become.
Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you are around.” I’ve seen this play out in locker rooms and in business.
If you surround yourself with people who settle, it becomes easier to settle.
But if you surround yourself with people who pursue excellence—people with strong character, strong habits, and strong faith—their mindset challenges you to rise.
And even when you can’t be in the room with them, you can still learn from them: books, biographies, interviews, mentors, coaches. Excellence rubs off when you stay close to it.
Time for Action
The fact is, there’s always room for growth.
Our potential is far greater than we often realize, but it requires effort, discipline, and the willingness to keep improving.
Excellence isn’t about perfection. It’s about showing up every day committed to becoming a little better than you were yesterday.
So ask yourself today: Where can I raise the standard? Where can I grow?
Because the pursuit of excellence isn’t a one-time decision.
It’s a way of living.
If your business needs marketing that works, give us a call. We're here to help!
Have a great day unless you chose otherwise!
