Are You Committed?
One of the greatest lessons I've learned in life didn't come from hockey. It didn't come from business. And it didn't come from a championship locker room.
It came from watching people. Watching who stayed. Watching who sacrificed.
Watching who showed up when things got hard.
And over time, I learned something simple: You always know who is committed.
You can see it. You can feel it. You can count on it.
And just as importantly... You know when someone isn't.
Commitment Shows Up in Action
Growing up, I saw two very different examples of commitment. One stayed. One left.
One sacrificed. One didn't.
Those experiences taught me something that has stayed with me my entire life:
Committed people focus on what they can give.
Uncommitted people focus on what they can get.
The difference is huge. Because when you're focused on what you can get, every situation becomes about you.
But when you're focused on what you can give, everything changes.
Your family gets better. Your team gets better. Your relationships get better.
And surprisingly... So do you.
Commitment Always Costs Something
One thing I've learned as a player, coach, husband, father, and business owner is this: Commitment isn't free.
It costs something. Sometimes it's your time. Sometimes it's your energy.
Sometimes it's your comfort. Sometimes it's your pride.
But every meaningful commitment requires sacrifice. Every championship team I've been part of required sacrifice.
Every successful business requires sacrifice. Every strong family requires sacrifice.
There is no way around it.
The question isn't whether commitment will cost you something.
The question is: Are you willing to pay the price?
The Hardest Person to Lead
Years ago, if I'm being honest, I wasn't always as committed as I should have been.
I was focused on building my career. Building my business. Chasing goals.
And somewhere along the way, I started focusing more on me than we.
My wife challenged me. She told me she needed more from me.
More commitment. More presence. More leadership at home.
I didn't love hearing it.
In fact, I remember joking with a friend and asking,
"Have you ever wanted a different team?"
He laughed. And the truth is, at the time, I thought maybe that was the answer.
But it wasn't. The problem wasn't my team.
The problem was my leadership.
The Moment Everything Changed
I eventually made a decision.
Instead of focusing on what everyone else needed to do better...
I would focus on what I needed to do better.
I stopped asking: "What am I getting?"
And started asking: "What am I giving?"
I committed to my home team.
I committed to putting we before me.
And something amazing happened.
My family got stronger.
My relationships got stronger.
And I became better too.
Because commitment has a way of transforming everyone it touches.
The Best Teams Understand This
As a coach, I've seen this lesson play out over and over again.
The best teams aren't always the most talented.
They're the most committed.
Committed to each other. Committed to the process.
Committed to doing the little things.
Committed to serving something bigger than themselves.
When a group of people decides to put the team first...
Special things happen.
A Challenge For This Week
This week, don't worry about someone else's commitment.
Don't focus on what others aren't doing.
Focus on your commitment. Be the committed one.
Ask yourself: What can I give today? What do I need to sacrifice?
Where can I serve? How can I make my team better?
And then commit. Commit to the person in the mirror.
Commit to your family. Commit to your teammates.
Commit to your purpose. Commit to the moment you're in.
Final Thought
At the end of the day, leadership isn't about talent.
It's not about titles. And it's not about recognition.
It's about commitment.
Because when you choose we before me, you become the kind of teammate, leader, spouse, parent, and friend that people can trust.
And trust is the foundation of every great team.
So today... Choose commitment. Choose sacrifice. Choose service.
Choose we before me. Because your commitment won't just make you better.
It will make everyone around you better too.
If your business needs marketing that works, give us a call. We're here to help!
Have a great day unless you chose otherwise!
