Building Greatness
Over the years, I've had the privilege of playing professional hockey, coaching young athletes, building businesses, and working alongside people who have achieved success at the highest levels.
One thing I've noticed is that greatness rarely happens by accident.
It isn't reserved for the most talented.
It isn't determined by luck.
And it certainly doesn't happen overnight.
Greatness is built.
One day.
One decision.
One effort at a time.
As a coach, I've seen players with incredible talent who never reached their potential because they were willing to be average.
I've also seen players with less natural ability become leaders and difference-makers because they refused to settle.
They cared more.
They worked harder.
They paid attention to the details.
And that's often the difference.
It's Easy to Be Average
The truth is, it's easy to just show up.
It's easy to go through the motions.
It's easy to do enough to get by.
Whether it's in hockey, business, school, or our relationships, average doesn't require much from us.
But average rarely changes lives.
Average rarely inspires people.
Average rarely leaves a legacy.
Nobody remembers the person who simply showed up.
People remember those who brought passion, purpose, and excellence to everything they did.
Michelangelo once said: "If people knew how hard I worked to gain my mastery, it wouldn't seem so wonderful at all."
That's the reality of greatness.
The masterpiece everyone sees is built through thousands of unseen moments of commitment and discipline.
The Difference Between Good and Great
Over the years I've asked teams, business groups, and leaders a simple question:
"How many of you believe you could work harder than you are right now?"
Almost every hand goes up.
Then I ask the follow-up question:
"If that's true, why don't you?"
The answer usually isn't about ability.
It's about caring.
Because when we truly care, we naturally give more.
We prepare more.
We sacrifice more.
We improve more.
When you care more, you do more.
When you do more, you become more.
Effort matters.
But what drives your effort matters even more.
The Lesson from the Fence
There's a story about Steve Jobs that has always stayed with me.
When he was a young boy, he watched his father building a fence in their backyard.
Steve noticed his father was carefully using quality wood and paying attention to the back side of the fence—the side nobody would ever see.
Curious, Steve asked him why he was spending so much time on something that no one would notice.
His father replied:
"You will know. I will know."
That lesson shaped Steve Jobs for the rest of his life.
It became part of the culture he built at Apple.
He believed craftsmanship mattered.
He believed details mattered.
He believed excellence mattered even when nobody was watching.
And that's a lesson all of us can apply.
Character is revealed in what we do when nobody is looking.
Excellence is built in the unseen places.
The same applies to our lives.
We can approach our work, our families, our leadership, and our relationships as carpenters.
Or we can approach them as craftsmen.
The choice is ours.
There Are No Overnight Successes
One of the biggest myths in today's world is the idea of overnight success.
The truth is that behind every successful person is a long journey filled with challenges, failures, setbacks, rejection, and doubt.
I've experienced that journey myself.
I've seen it in hockey.
I've seen it in coaching.
I've seen it in business.
Success isn't built in a moment.
It's built through persistence.
It's built through learning.
It's built through refusing to quit.
Every challenge teaches you something.
Every setback strengthens you.
Every obstacle prepares you for what's ahead.
The people who achieve greatness aren't the people who never fail.
They're the people who keep showing up.
Meraki
There's a word I love. It's called Meraki.
It's a Greek word that means to do something with love, creativity, and soul.
It means leaving a piece of yourself in your work. Leaving something behind.
I believe that's what greatness is all about. Not just completing a task.
Not just checking a box. But bringing your full self to what you're building.
Whether you're coaching a team. Leading a business.
Raising a family. Serving your community. Or pursuing a dream.
Do it with Meraki. Do it with heart. Do it with passion. Do it with purpose.
Final Thought
The world doesn't need more people going through the motions.
It needs more people who care.
More people who take pride in their work.
More people who choose excellence when average would be easier.
So whatever you're building today, build it well.
Put your heart into it.
Put your soul into it.
Leave a piece of yourself in it.
Because greatness isn't found in talent alone.
It's found in the care, commitment, and craftsmanship we bring to our work every single day.
If your business needs marketing that works, give us a call. We're here to help!
Have a great day unless you chose otherwise!
