Think Beyond Today
Over the years, I've had the opportunity to play professional hockey, build businesses, coach young athletes, and work alongside people who have achieved incredible success.
One thing I've learned is this: The people who accomplish the most in life rarely focus on today alone.
They think further ahead than everyone else.
Years ago, I heard something that has stayed with me ever since.
A successful leader said that if the founder of an organization doesn't intentionally prepare the next generation of leaders while they're still leading, that organization will likely disappear within ten years after they're gone.
At first, I thought that only applied to businesses.
Today, I believe it applies to everything.
Families. Teams. Churches. Companies. Even our own lives.
If we're only focused on today, we're missing the opportunity to build something that lasts.
I've seen this firsthand in hockey. The best coaches don't simply prepare their team for the next game. They prepare young players for the next level.
The best leaders don't create followers. They develop leaders.
The same principle applies in business. The companies that continue to grow aren't always the ones with the biggest budgets or the smartest people. They're the ones making decisions today that will pay off years from now.
When I first started in business, I assumed successful people had advantages the rest of us didn't.
More talent. More education. More connections. More luck.
Over time, I discovered that wasn't true.
Many successful entrepreneurs have experienced failure.
They've been fired. They've lost money. They've made costly mistakes.
The difference isn't that they avoid failure.
The difference is they refuse to let failure define them.
They learn. They adjust. And they keep moving forward.
What separates exceptional people isn't perfection. It's perspective.
They think differently because they think further ahead.
Most people plan until the next payday. Successful people plan for the next five years.
Great leaders think about the next generation.
That perspective changes everything. It changes how you spend your time.
How you invest your money.
How you build relationships.
How you raise your children.
How you lead your team.
How you handle setbacks.
I've made my share of mistakes. I've lost opportunities. I've made decisions I'd love to have back.
But every setback taught me something I couldn't have learned any other way.
Failure isn't the opposite of success. It's often part of the journey.
One of my favorite reminders is this: “Success belongs to those who have the courage to keep going long after others have quit.”
Legendary investor Warren Buffett once said that wealth is transferred from the impatient to the patient.
Think about that. His greatest success didn't happen early in life. The overwhelming majority of his wealth came after the age of 65.
Imagine if he had stopped too soon.
The same is true for many of us. Your biggest opportunity may still be ahead of you.
Your greatest impact may not come from what you've already accomplished. It may come from what you're building today.
So don't become discouraged if progress feels slow. Don't quit because success hasn't arrived on your timeline.
Keep showing up.
Keep learning.
Keep investing.
Keep believing.
Most importantly...
Think beyond today.
Because the life you're living tomorrow is being built by the decisions you're making today.
