Leadership Is Earned
Over the years, I've had the privilege of playing professional hockey, building businesses, and coaching young athletes who dreamed of reaching the next level.
Those experiences have taught me something I'll never forget. Leadership isn't something you're given. It's something you earn.
I've played with talented players who never became leaders.
I've also played with athletes who weren't the most gifted, but when they walked into the dressing room, everyone stood a little taller because they trusted them.
The same is true in business. A title might make you the boss. But it will never make you the leader.
People choose whether or not they're going to follow you. Looking back, I've learned there are a few qualities that separate good leaders from great ones.
Great Leaders Never Outgrow the Basics
Whether I was playing hockey, coaching behind the bench, or leading a business, I discovered that success always comes back to the fundamentals.
Communicate clearly. Show up on time. Do what you say you're going to do. Treat people with respect.
Encourage more than you criticize.
It's amazing how many people are looking for the next great leadership secret while neglecting the simple things that build trust every single day.
Championships are built on fundamentals. So are great organizations.
Preparation Is a Sign of Respect
Some of the best coaches I ever had were the ones who always seemed prepared.
They knew their players. They knew our strengths. They knew where we needed to improve.
That preparation gave us confidence. As a coach, I've tried to do the same.
Whether I'm preparing for a practice, a game, or a conversation with a player or parent, I've learned that preparation sends a powerful message.
It tells people they matter. People can tell the difference between someone who is prepared and someone who is simply showing up.
Take Responsibility
One lesson sports teaches you quickly is that blaming others never makes the team better.
I've won games because teammates made incredible plays. I've lost games because of mistakes—some of them my own.
Leadership means accepting responsibility before looking for excuses.
In business, it's the same. When things go well, give your team the credit.
When things go wrong, look in the mirror first.
People don't expect leaders to be perfect. They expect them to be accountable.
Your Attitude Sets the Tone
As a coach, I learned something that changed the way I lead.
Players don't just hear what you say. They feel what you believe.
If I walked into the dressing room frustrated, they felt it.
If I walked in confident and prepared, they felt that too.
The same is true in business. Your attitude is contagious.
Whether you're leading your family, your employees, or your team, people are constantly taking their emotional cues from you.
Guard your mindset. Because whatever fills your heart eventually influences everyone around you.
Leadership Is About Others
The older I get, the more convinced I become that leadership has very little to do with position.
It has everything to do with service. The best coaches I've ever known cared more about developing people than building their own reputation.
The best business leaders I've met measured success by how many others they helped succeed.
That's the kind of leader I want to become. Because one day, nobody will remember our titles.
They'll remember how we treated people. They'll remember whether we believed in them.
They'll remember whether we made them better. And in the end...
That's what leadership is all about.
Final Thought
Leadership isn't measured by how many people work for you.
It's measured by how many people are better because you led them.
