Fear or Faith?
Over the years, I’ve learned that some of life’s biggest battles aren’t fought on a hockey rink, in a boardroom, or against another person.
They’re fought between our ears.
They’re battles over what we choose to believe.
And one of the biggest battles we all face is the battle between fear and faith.
Think about this for a moment.
Fear and faith actually have something very important in common.
They both believe in a future that hasn’t happened yet.
Fear looks ahead and says:
Something bad is going to happen.
Faith looks ahead and says:
Somehow, we’re going to get through this.
Neither future has happened yet.
So if we’re going to believe in something we cannot yet see, why not choose faith?
Why not believe that God is still working?
Why not believe there are opportunities ahead that we cannot see today?
Why not believe that some of our best days may still be in front of us?
Two Roads
Throughout my life, I’ve faced moments when I had no idea what was going to happen next.
I experienced them as a hockey player.
I’ve experienced them in business.
I’ve experienced them as a coach.
And like every family, we’ve experienced moments when life suddenly changed and the future looked nothing like we had imagined.
In those moments, I’ve learned that eventually we come to a fork in the road.
One road is fear.
The other is faith.
And we can’t travel both roads at the same time.
We have to choose.
That choice matters because what we believe about tomorrow influences how we live today.
Not All Fear Is Bad
I’m not suggesting we should never experience fear.
Fear can actually be useful.
There were times playing hockey when fear sharpened my focus. There are times in business when fear causes us to look carefully at the numbers, prepare for challenges, and manage risk. As parents, fear can alert us that something needs our attention.
A healthy amount of fear can make us prepare.
The problem begins when fear stops being a warning signal and starts becoming the driver.
When fear gets behind the wheel, we panic, overreact, freeze, and begin imagining everything that could go wrong.
Before long, we’re fighting battles that haven’t even happened.
Make the Next Play
As a coach, I see this with players all the time.
A player makes a mistake and suddenly starts thinking:
What if I make another mistake?
What if Coach stops playing me?
What if I let my teammates down?
Nothing has actually happened yet, but fear has already created an entire future in that player’s mind.
Once they start playing afraid, they hesitate. They grip the stick tighter. They stop trusting themselves.
Life works the same way.
Fear convinces us to live tomorrow’s problems today.
Faith brings us back to the present.
Faith says:
Make the next play.
Take the next step.
Have the conversation.
Do the work in front of you.
And trust God with what you cannot control.
Faith Doesn’t Mean Easy
Faith doesn’t mean believing that nothing bad will ever happen.
Life has taught me otherwise.
There will be setbacks.
There will be disappointments.
There will be losses.
There will be seasons we don’t understand.
Faith isn’t pretending those things don’t exist.
Faith is believing they don’t get the final word.
It’s believing that adversity can develop us rather than destroy us.
And it’s trusting that God can use even the difficult chapters of our lives for a greater purpose.
Your Belief Affects Others
There’s something else I’ve learned about fear and faith:
Both are contagious.
As a coach, if I walk into the dressing room filled with fear and doubt, my players will feel it.
If a business leader operates from fear, the organization will feel it.
If a parent constantly communicates fear, the family will feel it.
But belief spreads too.
Hope spreads.
Confidence spreads.
Faith spreads.
Sometimes leadership simply means being the person who continues to believe when everyone else is beginning to doubt.
Final Thought
None of us knows exactly what tomorrow will bring.
But we do have a choice about what we bring to today.
Fear says:
What if everything goes wrong?
Faith asks:
What if something incredible is still ahead?
Fear focuses on the problem.
Faith looks for the possibility.
Fear freezes us.
Faith moves us.
So when you find yourself worrying about a future that hasn’t happened yet, remember:
Make the next play.
Do what you can control.
Prepare. Work. Serve. Believe. Pray. And keep moving forward.
Because your best days may not be behind you.
They may still be ahead of you.
Fear or Faith?
Choose wisely!
If your business needs marketing that works, give us a call. We're here to help!
Have a great day unless you chose otherwise!
