The Unseen Mile
We live in a world that loves the finish line. We celebrate the championship. The promotion. The successful business.
The athlete who signs the contract. The person standing on the stage receiving the award.
We see the accomplishment, but we rarely see everything that happened before it.
Having spent much of my life around sports and business, I've learned that there is always another story behind the success.
I call it The Unseen Mile. It's the work nobody applauds. The sacrifice nobody notices. The early mornings.
The late nights. The disappointments. The failures.
The moments when you're tired, discouraged, questioning yourself—and you decide to keep going anyway.
That's where greatness is really built.
What People Don't See
When I think back on my hockey career, people might see the games, the goals, the opportunities, or the fact that I was fortunate enough to sign a professional contract.
But that's only part of the story. They didn't see all the practices. The workouts. The injuries. The disappointments.
The extra work when nobody was watching.
They didn't see the internal battles that every athlete experiences—the doubts, pressure, setbacks, and questions about whether all the work would eventually pay off.
Those were my unseen miles. And as I've gotten older, I've realized hockey wasn't unique.
Life is filled with unseen miles. It's the business owner lying awake at night wondering how they're going to make everything work.
It's the student studying while their friends are out having fun.
It's the parent making sacrifices their children may never fully understand.
It's the young athlete staying on the ice after practice working on something they haven't mastered yet.
It's the person fighting an internal battle while everyone around them thinks everything is fine.
Most of life's important work happens when nobody is watching.
Character Is Built in Private
One of the things I constantly try to teach the young players I coach is that development doesn't only happen during games.
It's what you do between the games that determines who you eventually become.
Anyone can work hard when the coach is watching.
Anyone can be motivated when the stands are full.
Anyone can feel inspired when things are going well.
The real question is: What do you do when nobody is watching?
Do you take the extra rep? Do you finish the workout? Do you keep your commitment?
Do you do the right thing when nobody would know if you didn't?
That's where character is built. And character eventually shows up when the lights come on.
Learn to Love the Process
One of the biggest lessons I've learned throughout my journey is to stop living only for the destination.
Goals are important. Winning matters. Results matter.
But if the only thing that keeps you motivated is the finish line, the journey is going to become very difficult.
You have to learn to appreciate the process.
The small improvements. The lessons. The setbacks that make you stronger.
The days when you showed up even though you didn't feel like it.
Success is rarely one giant breakthrough.
More often, it's hundreds of small decisions compounded over time.
Remember Your Why
There will be days when motivation disappears.
That's normal. That's when discipline has to take over.
And there will be moments when even discipline feels difficult.
That's when you need to remember why you started.
Why does this matter to you? Who are you doing it for?
What kind of person are you trying to become?
For me, faith has also become an important part of understanding the unseen mile.
I've learned that just because nobody else sees the work doesn't mean it isn't seen.
God sees the effort. He sees the struggle. He sees the perseverance.
He sees the moments when quitting would be easier but you choose to keep moving forward.
Sometimes the season that feels like it's producing nothing is actually preparing you for what's coming next.
Final Thought
Take a moment this week and think about your own unseen miles.
The challenges you've overcome. The sacrifices you've made.
The quiet victories nobody celebrated. Give yourself some credit for how far you've come.
But don't stop. There may still be another mile ahead.
Another challenge. Another lesson. Another season of preparation.
Keep showing up. Keep doing the work. Keep trusting the process. Keep the faith.
Because eventually, the work done in the dark has a way of showing up in the light.
And when people finally see the finish line, you'll know something they don't.
The finish line didn't create you. The unseen miles did.
If your business needs marketing that works, give us a call. We're here to help!
Have a great day unless you chose otherwise!
