The Price of the Next Level
Throughout my journey, I've learned that almost everything worthwhile has a price.
We all want to grow.
We want the opportunity.
The promotion.
The successful business.
The championship.
The next level.
But I've learned there is an important question we sometimes forget to ask:
Are we willing to pay the price that comes with it?
Because every new level of life requires us to leave something comfortable behind.
Every New Level Makes You a Beginner Again
I experienced this over and over during my hockey career.
When you're one of the better players at one level, you feel pretty good about yourself.
Then you move up.
Suddenly, everyone is good.
The players are faster.
They're stronger.
The game happens quicker.
The things that made you successful before may no longer be enough.
You're uncomfortable again.
But that's exactly where growth begins.
I've experienced the same thing in business and coaching.
Every time I've stepped into a bigger opportunity, I've had moments when I've wondered:
Am I ready for this?
Do I belong here?
Can I actually do this?
I think most of us have felt that way at some point.
There's actually a concept called the Frog Pond Effect. The basic idea is that we often judge ourselves by where we stand compared to the people around us.
It's comfortable being a big frog in a small pond.
But eventually, if you want to grow, you may have to find a bigger pond.
And being the small frog again can be humbling.
Growth Has a Cost of Entry
Moving into the bigger pond might mean being the least experienced person in the room.
It might mean asking questions you think you should already know the answers to.
It might mean failing at something you used to be good at.
It might mean watching other people perform at a level you haven't reached yet.
That can be hard on the ego.
But I've learned not to run from that feeling.
Being uncomfortable doesn't necessarily mean you're in the wrong place. Sometimes it means you're growing into the right one.
As a coach, I want young players to understand this.
If you're always the best player in every drill, maybe you need a harder drill.
If nobody around you challenges you, maybe you need to surround yourself with people who do.
If you're never uncomfortable, you may not be stretching yourself enough.
Growth and comfort rarely travel together.
Don't Let Your Ego Keep You Small
One of the biggest barriers to growth isn't ability.
It's ego.
We like being good at things.
We like knowing the answers.
We like feeling competent.
We like being recognized.
Starting over threatens all of that.
But sometimes becoming a beginner again is exactly what we need.
I've had to learn that lesson more than once throughout my life.
Every new chapter has required me to learn something new, listen to people who knew more than I did, make mistakes, adjust, and keep going.
Humility isn't thinking less of yourself.
It's being secure enough to admit:
I still have more to learn.
Final Thought
Maybe there's an area of your life right now where you've become comfortable.
You're doing well.
You know the routine.
You know you can succeed there.
But somewhere inside, you also know there's another level.
Maybe it's in your career.
Your business.
Your leadership.
Your health.
Your faith.
Or simply the person you're capable of becoming.
The next level may require you to become uncomfortable again.
That's the price of entry.
So don't be afraid to walk into a room where you're not the smartest person.
Don't be embarrassed to become a beginner again.
Don't allow your ego to keep you in a pond you've already outgrown.
You asked for growth.
Be willing to pay the price that comes with it.
Because sometimes the biggest thing standing between where you are and where you're capable of going is simply having the courage to find a bigger pond.
If your business needs marketing that works, give us a call. We're here to help!
Have a great day unless you chose otherwise!
