Win The Battle Within
One of the lessons hockey taught me early in life is that the game often begins long before the puck drops.
It begins between your ears.
I played with and against a lot of talented players over the years. At the higher levels, everyone could play. Everyone could skate. Everyone had skill.
But there were nights when you could almost sense which team believed they were going to win before the game even started.
And I've seen the opposite.
If you stepped onto the ice already defeated in your mind, quite often the scoreboard eventually confirmed it.
As I've gotten older, I've realized hockey was teaching me a lesson that had very little to do with hockey.
Before you can win the battles around you, you have to learn to win the battle within you.
What Are You Feeding Your Mind?
I was talking with some of the young players I coach recently about how much time and attention athletes put into their bodies.
We talk about nutrition. Training. Recovery. Sleep.
All important things.
But I asked them: What are you feeding your mind?
Because your mind needs fuel too.
If we constantly feed ourselves negativity, fear, comparison, gossip, and everything that's wrong with the world, we shouldn't be surprised when we become discouraged and anxious.
You can't continually put garbage in and expect greatness to come out.
I've learned this lesson in every area of my life.
Hockey taught it to me.
Business reinforced it.
Coaching reminds me of it almost every day.
And some of the most difficult seasons of my life have tested it.
There have been times when circumstances around me were completely outside my control.
What I could control was what I allowed to take root inside me.
Faith Changed My Perspective
As I've grown in my faith, I've become much more intentional about what I allow to shape my thinking.
Prayer matters.
God's Word matters.
Gratitude matters.
The people I surround myself with matter.
None of those things guarantee that life will be easy.
I've had setbacks in hockey.
I've gone through difficult seasons in business.
I've faced challenges as a coach, husband, and father.
Faith didn't make those challenges disappear.
It changed how I walked through them.
It reminded me that a difficult season wasn't the whole story.
It taught me to focus on what I could control and trust God with what I couldn't.
And it taught me that sometimes the biggest opponent we face isn't standing across from us.
It's the voice inside telling us we're not good enough, things will never change, or we should give up.
That's a battle we have to learn to win.
Protect Your Inner World
Today, I'm much more intentional about protecting what goes into my mind.
I try to start my day with something that strengthens me before allowing the outside world to tell me what I should be worried about.
I try to surround myself with people who challenge and encourage me.
And I've learned to practice gratitude.
Gratitude doesn't mean ignoring what's wrong.
It means refusing to become blind to everything that's right.
When we focus only on what we're missing, fear grows.
When we remember what God has already given us and brought us through, faith grows.
What we focus on has a way of becoming bigger. So, choose carefully.
Final Thought
There will always be things in life we can't control.
The bounce of the puck.
The economy.
Other people's decisions.
The challenges that unexpectedly come our way.
But we can choose what we allow to shape us.
We can choose what we feed our minds.
We can choose gratitude over complaining.
We can choose faith over fear.
I've learned throughout my journey that some of life's greatest victories never appear on a scoreboard.
Sometimes the victory is simply refusing to quit when quitting would be easier.
So, protect your mind.
Feed your faith.
Control what you can control.
Trust God with what you can't.
And win the battle within.
If your business needs marketing that works, give us a call. We're here to help!
Have a great day unless you chose otherwise!
