FUEL: What Are You Running On?

One thing I learned early in my hockey career was that you can't expect your body to perform at a high level if you don't give it the right fuel.

What you put in eventually shows up in your performance.

As I've gotten older, I've realized the same principle applies to almost every area of life.

Our minds need fuel.

Our relationships need fuel.

Our faith needs fuel.

Our purpose needs fuel.

And whether we realize it or not, every day we're putting something into ourselves.

The question is: What are you running on?

I've learned throughout my journey that if I'm constantly running on stress, negativity, fear, and frustration, eventually I'm going to run out of gas.

But when I'm intentional about what I put into my life, something changes.

So here's a simple way to think about the FUEL we're putting into ourselves each day.

F — Feed the Positive

We live in a world where negativity is incredibly easy to find.

Turn on the news.

Open social media.

Listen to the conversations around you.

If we're not careful, we can spend the entire day consuming everything that's wrong with the world.

I've learned that I have to be intentional about what I feed my mind.

One of the simplest ways I've found to do that is gratitude.

Instead of beginning the day thinking about everything that's wrong, I try to remember what's right.

My family.

The people God has placed in my life.

The opportunities I've been given.

The lessons I've learned.

Another day to make a difference.

Gratitude doesn't mean life is perfect.

It means we're choosing not to allow our problems to blind us to our blessings.

Feed what you want to grow.

U — Uplift Your Mind

Hockey taught me the importance of recovery.

You can't continually push your body without eventually giving it an opportunity to recover.

I've learned our minds and spirits aren't much different.

We need moments to reset.

For me, that's where my faith has become so important.

Prayer. Reading God's Word. Quiet time. Getting outside.

Having meaningful conversations with people I trust.

Sometimes we become so busy trying to accomplish the next thing that we forget to take care of the person doing the accomplishing.

I've learned that constantly running harder isn't always the answer.

Sometimes we need to slow down long enough to reconnect with what matters.

E — Encourage Others

As a coach, I've seen firsthand how powerful a few words can be.

Sometimes a young player doesn't need another drill.

They don't need another correction.

They simply need someone to look them in the eye and say:

“I believe in you.”

Those words can change the way a player sees themselves.

The same is true in life.

Everyone is carrying something we know nothing about.

Your teammate. Your spouse. Your children. Your employees. Your friends.

The person you pass in the hallway.

One sincere word of encouragement can completely change someone's day.

I've always loved the meaning behind the word encourage:

To put courage into someone.

That's leadership.

Don't underestimate your ability to put courage into another person.

L — Lead With Love

This may be the most important one.

Fear drains us.

Fear makes us hesitate.

Fear makes us protect ourselves.

Love does the opposite.

Love causes us to serve.

To sacrifice. To care. To keep showing up.

I've learned this in hockey, business, coaching, and especially in my family and faith.

You don't have to love every difficult circumstance you encounter.

But you can choose how you respond to it.

You can lead with love.

Love your family.

Love your teammates.

Love the people you lead.

Love the opportunity you've been given.

Love the process of becoming better.

And when things get difficult, remember why you started in the first place.

Final Thought

Every day we wake up and put fuel into our lives.

Some of it strengthens us.

Some of it drains us.

The choice is often ours.

So this week, take a look at what you're running on.

Feed the positive.

Uplift your mind.

Encourage others.

Lead with love.

And above all, stay connected to the source of your strength.

I've learned throughout my journey that I was never meant to do all of this on my own.

My faith reminds me where my strength ultimately comes from.

So be intentional about what you put into yourself and what you pour into others.

Because just like an athlete can't perform without the right fuel, neither can we.

If your business needs marketing that works, give us a call. We're here to help!

Have a great day unless you chose otherwise!

Quote of the Week

Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.

Word of the Week

Elegiac (el-uh-jye-ak) :  often describes a poem, song, piece of writing, etc. that mourns something now past.

Eg: The elegiac tone of the singer’s first album always leaves me in tears.

Proverb of the Week

Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues.

(Proverbs 17 verse 28 The Bible)
