Be The One They Call
I came across a question recently that stopped me in my tracks: If you were stuck in a foreign prison and had one phone call—who would you call to get you out?
I immediately started thinking about the people I've been blessed to know throughout my journey.
Teammates. Coaches. Friends. Business partners.
People who, when things go sideways, you know will answer the phone.
But then another question hit me even harder: Would I be the person someone else would call?
That question stayed with me.
Because it's really not about being stuck in a foreign prison.
It's about becoming the kind of person others know they can count on when life gets difficult.
When Things Go Sideways
Hockey taught me a lot about people.
It's easy to look good when you're winning.
You learn much more about someone when you're down a goal late in the third period, when things aren't going your way, or when the pressure is on.
Some people panic. Some people point fingers. Some people disappear.
And then there are those people who seem to become better when things get difficult.
They stay calm. They take action. They find a way.
I've seen those people in hockey. I've seen them in business. I've seen them in coaching.
And I've been fortunate to have some of them in my own life.
Over the years, I've tried to learn from them.
Find a Way
One quality I've always admired is resourcefulness.
In hockey, things rarely go exactly according to plan.
You adjust. You adapt. You make the next play.
Business is the same. So is life. Perfect conditions rarely arrive.
Sometimes you simply have to look at what's in front of you and ask: What can I do right now?
Not who's to blame.
Not why this shouldn't have happened.
Not why someone else should fix it.
What can I do?
I've learned that people you can count on don't always have all the answers.
But they have a willingness to find one.
They take ownership.
They make the phone call.
They have the difficult conversation.
They ask for help when they need it.
And they keep moving forward.
Have the Courage to Speak Up
Being someone, others can count on doesn't mean always telling people what they want to hear.
Sometimes it's exactly the opposite.
Some of the people who've helped me most throughout my journey were willing to tell me the truth.
Good teammates do that. Good coaches do that. Good friends do that.
Good leaders do that. Not to tear someone down. To help them become better.
As a coach today, I think about this often.
If I truly care about a player, sometimes encouragement is exactly what he needs.
Other times, caring means having a conversation he'd rather not have.
People you can count on care enough to tell you the truth.
Know Where Your Strength Comes From
There's one more thing I've learned along the way.
You can't be strong for everyone else all the time on your own.
There have been plenty of situations in my life when I didn't know the answer.
Times in hockey. Times in business. Times as a husband, father, and coach.
That's where my faith has become such an important part of my journey.
My confidence doesn't come from believing I can control every outcome.
I can't.
It comes from knowing where I turn when I don't know what to do.
For me, that's God.
Faith doesn't mean I'll always have the answer.
It means I don't have to face the question alone.
And that gives me the confidence to take the next step even when I can't see the entire path.
Final Thought
So, I keep coming back to that original question: Who would you call?
I'm grateful that I have people in my life whose names immediately come to mind.
But maybe the more important question is: Whose list would your name be on?
That's the person I want to keep becoming.
The husband my family can count on.
The friend who answers the phone.
The coach who shows up for his players.
The leader who stays steady when things get difficult.
The person who doesn't necessarily have every answer—but will help find a way.
Not because I have it all figured out.
I don't.
But because I've learned throughout my journey that character isn't just about what we accomplish.
It's about who people know they can count on when it matters most.
So, take action. Be resourceful. Tell the truth. Keep the faith.
And become the kind of person that when life goes sideways and someone needs help; they don't have to think very long about who to call.
Be the one they call.
If your business needs marketing that works, give us a call. We're here to help!
Have a great day unless you chose otherwise!
