The Power of One!
Over the years, I've had the privilege of meeting some incredible people.
Professional athletes. Coaches. Business leaders.
People who have achieved great success and influenced thousands of lives.
And one thing I've learned throughout my journey is that the people who make the greatest impact aren't always the ones with the biggest platforms, the most impressive titles, or the most recognition.
Sometimes they're the people who simply take the time to make a difference in one person's life.
Never underestimate the power of one.
Someone Believed in Me
When I look back on my hockey career, I think about the people who helped me along the way.
The coaches who believed in me. The teammates who encouraged me.
The people who challenged me to become better.
At the time, I probably didn't fully appreciate the influence they were having on my life.
But looking back, I realize that some of the most important moments in my journey came from someone taking the time to invest in me.
A conversation. A word of encouragement. A challenge to work harder.
Someone seeing something in me that I hadn't yet seen in myself.
Those moments mattered. And they've stayed with me long after my playing days ended.
The Other Side of the Bench
Today, as a coach, I get to experience influence from a different perspective.
I'm no longer the young player chasing a dream.
I'm the coach trying to help young players chase theirs.
And I've learned that coaching is about much more than teaching systems, developing skills, or winning hockey games.
It's about people.
Sometimes a player needs instruction. Sometimes he needs accountability.
And sometimes he simply needs someone to believe in him.
I've seen how a little encouragement can change a young player's confidence.
How one conversation can change his attitude. How taking a few extra minutes to listen can make a difference.
We may never know the full impact those moments have. But that doesn't make them any less important.
Sometimes the greatest thing we can give another person is our time, attention, and belief in who they can become.
Influence Doesn't Require a Platform
We live in a world that often measures influence by numbers.
How many followers do you have? How many people know your name? How big is your business?
How many people are listening?
But I've come to believe that influence isn't about how many people know who you are.
It's about how many people are better because you were part of their lives.
I've seen this in hockey. I've seen it in business. And I've experienced it in my family and faith.
Some of the most influential people I've known weren't famous.
They were simply faithful. They showed up. They cared. They served.
They invested in others without expecting anything in return.
And their influence continued long after the moment had passed.
The Ripple Effect
One of the things I love about coaching is that you never really know where your influence will end.
You encourage one young player. That player becomes a better teammate.
One day, he becomes a leader. Maybe a coach. Maybe a father.
Maybe someone who encourages another young person who needs somebody to believe in them.
And the impact continues.
That's the ripple effect of influence. One person invests in another. Who invests in another.
Who invests in another.
I've often thought about how Jesus changed the world.
He didn't begin with a massive organization or an impressive platform.
He invested deeply in a small group of people.
He taught them. He served them. He loved them.
And their influence reached generations.
What a powerful reminder that we don't have to reach everyone to make a difference.
We just have to be willing to reach someone.
Final Thought
As I've gotten older, my definition of success has changed.
There was a time when success was measured by goals, wins, contracts, and accomplishments.
Today, I think much more about the people.
The players I've coached. The relationships I've built.
The opportunities I've had to encourage someone along the way.
Because when this journey is over, I don't believe the most important question will be how much we accomplished.
It will be: Whose life is better because we were part of it?
This week, I want you to think about one person.
One person who needs encouragement. One person who needs your time.
One person who needs someone to believe in them.
Reach out. Have the conversation. Offer your support. Invest in them.
You don't have to change the whole world today.
Just make a difference in one person's world and never underestimate the power of one.
