Of Course You Can!
When I look back on my journey, from a young boy dreaming of playing in the NHL to eventually signing a professional hockey contract, I often think about the people who believed in me along the way.
There were coaches who challenged me.
Teammates who encouraged me.
And people who saw something in me that I hadn't yet learned to see in myself.
But one of the greatest influences in my life was my dad.
Growing up, like most young athletes, I had big dreams.
I wanted to play in the NHL.
But there were plenty of moments when that dream seemed a long way off.
I wasn't always the biggest player.
I wasn't always the most talented.
And there were times when I questioned whether I was good enough.
Whenever I expressed those doubts, my dad had a simple response.
He would look me straight in the eye and say: “Of course you can.”
Not maybe.
Not we'll see.
Not just do your best.
Of course you can.
He said it with such conviction that eventually I started believing it myself.
Looking back, I realize he was giving me something far more valuable than advice.
He was giving me belief.
Someone Has to See It First
I've learned throughout my journey that sometimes we need someone else to see our potential before we can see it ourselves.
That's what my dad did for me.
He didn't guarantee that everything would work out.
He couldn't control the outcome.
But he helped me believe that the dream was worth pursuing and that I was capable of doing the work.
Those words stayed with me through difficult seasons in hockey, through setbacks, and later through challenges in business and life.
And today, I find myself on the other side of that conversation.
As a coach, I work with young players who have their own dreams, doubts, and insecurities.
Sometimes a player makes a mistake and immediately starts questioning himself.
Sometimes he compares himself to someone who's bigger, stronger, or more talented.
And sometimes he simply needs someone to remind him of what he's capable of becoming.
I've learned that coaching isn't just about developing skills.
It's about developing belief.
There are times when a player needs correction.
There are times when he needs accountability.
But there are also times when the most important thing I can give him is the confidence to believe in himself.
Just as my dad once did for me.
Speak Life Into People
There's a lot of talk today about manifesting your future.
Personally, I've never been completely comfortable with that idea.
I don't believe we create outcomes simply by speaking them into existence.
I believe that power belongs to God.
But I absolutely believe in the power of speaking faith, encouragement, and possibility into another person's life.
I call it casting a vision.
It's seeing something in someone that they may not yet see in themselves.
It's helping them recognize their gifts.
It's challenging them to grow.
And it's reminding them that their current circumstances don't have to determine their future.
The Bible tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:11 to encourage one another and build each other up.
I love that.
Because encouragement isn't simply telling someone what they want to hear.
It's helping them find the courage to become who God created them to be.
And I've seen firsthand what can happen when someone truly believes in another person.
Final Thought
As I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate just how powerful a few words can be.
My dad probably never imagined how often those three simple words would come back to me throughout my life.
But they have.
And now, as a father, coach, business owner, and someone who wants to make a difference in the lives of others, I realize I have the opportunity to pass that same gift along.
So here's my challenge for you this week.
Think about someone in your life who needs to hear that you believe in them.
Maybe it's your son or daughter.
A young athlete.
A teammate.
A friend.
Someone who's struggling to see their own potential.
Don't assume they already know.
Tell them.
Remind them of their strengths.
Encourage them to keep going.
Help them see what's possible.
You never know how far your words might carry someone.
I know that because I'm still carrying the words my dad spoke into my life all those years ago.
“Of course you can.”
Sometimes that's all someone needs to hear to find the courage to take the next step.
If your business needs marketing that works, give us a call. We're here to help!
Have a great day unless you chose otherwise!
