The Power Of I AM!

One of the greatest lessons I've learned throughout my journey is that the conversations we have with ourselves are often more important than the conversations we have with anyone else.

Think about that for a moment.

Every day, we're talking to ourselves.

Sometimes we don't even realize it.

I'm not good enough.

I'm getting too old.

I can't do this.

I'm not as talented as that person.

What if I fail?

And the more we repeat those thoughts, the more we begin to believe them.

I've seen this throughout my life as a hockey player, business owner, coach, and father.

What we believe about ourselves has a powerful influence on what we're willing to attempt and who we're capable of becoming.

The Voice Between Your Ears

When I played hockey, I learned pretty quickly that the game wasn't just physical.

It was mental.

I played with and against some incredibly talented athletes. But talent alone didn't determine how far someone would go.

Confidence mattered.

Belief mattered.

And the way a player talked to himself mattered.

I've seen players make one mistake and spend the rest of the game convincing themselves they weren't good enough.

I've also seen players make the same mistake, shake it off, and come back stronger on their next shift.

The difference wasn't necessarily ability.

It was what they chose to believe.

Today, as a coach, I see the same thing with young players.

Sometimes the biggest obstacle standing between a player and his potential isn't his skating, shooting, or hockey sense.

It's the voice between his ears.

That's why I try to remind them that they have to be careful about what they say to themselves.

Because eventually, the words we repeat can become the beliefs we live by.

Two Powerful Words

There are two words we use every day that carry more influence than we sometimes realize.

I AM.

Think about what follows those two words in your own life.

I am tired.

I am afraid.

I am not good enough.

I am a failure.

Or...

I am capable.

I am learning.

I am disciplined.

I am resilient.

I am becoming better.

The circumstances may not have changed.

The challenges may still be there.

But the way we approach them can change dramatically.

I've learned this lesson in hockey, business, and through some difficult seasons in my personal life.

There have been moments when things didn't go according to plan.

Moments when I questioned myself.

Moments when the road ahead looked uncertain.

But I've learned that allowing those circumstances to define who I am only makes the journey more difficult.

A setback is something you experience. It doesn't have to become your identity.

Remember Who You Are

As my faith has grown, I've come to understand something even more important.

My identity isn't determined by the scoreboard.

It's not determined by a business success or failure.

It's not determined by what other people think of me.

And it's certainly not determined by one difficult season.

My identity is rooted in who God created me to be.

That doesn't mean I can simply say something positive and expect everything to work out.

Life doesn't work that way.

Faith still requires action.

Growth still requires discipline.

Success still requires effort.

But when we begin with the belief that God has given us gifts, purpose, and the ability to grow, we approach life differently.

Instead of saying, I can't, we begin asking, how can I?

Instead of allowing failure to define us, we learn from it.

Instead of comparing ourselves to everyone else, we focus on becoming the person God created us to be.

Final Thought

So, here's my challenge for you this week.

Pay attention to the words that follow I AM.

What are you telling yourself?

Are those words building your confidence or tearing it down?

Are they helping you move forward or keeping you stuck?

Maybe it's time to change the conversation.

I am capable of learning.

I am stronger than I think.

I am willing to do the work.

I am someone who doesn't give up.

I am grateful.

I am a person of faith.

You don't have to pretend everything is perfect.

You don't have to deny the challenges in front of you.

But you can choose not to let those challenges define you.

I've learned throughout my journey that we don't always control what happens to us.

But we have a great deal of influence over what we choose to believe about ourselves and how we respond.

So, choose your words carefully.

Believe in the gifts God has given you.

Back those beliefs up with action.

And remember that the person you're becoming is shaped, in part, by the conversation you're having with yourself today.

I AM __________.
