Stay In The Game!

This week’s message is one that hit me differently. Not just as a coach. Not just as someone who’s been around the game.

But as a father.

Because sometimes the battles we talk about in sports… are nothing compared to the ones people are fighting in real life.

When Life Gets Heavy

As a coach, I’ve asked players countless times: “Can you push through one more shift?” “Can you battle through one more period?”

And they always say yes.

But life doesn’t always work like a hockey game. Sometimes it’s not a shift. Sometimes it’s not a period. Sometimes it’s years.

Years of fighting something no one else can see.

A Fight No One Else Can Fight For You

I read a story about a young man who, from the outside, looked like he had everything.

But inside…

He was struggling.

Anxiety that wouldn’t let go. Depression that kept pulling him down. A feeling that he didn’t belong anywhere.

His family did everything they could. They showed up. They supported him. They fought for him.

But here’s the hardest truth: At some point… the choice has to come from within.

You can’t fight that battle for someone else.

The Turning Point

At one of his lowest points, he left everything behind and ended up in Costa Rica.

New place. New environment.

But the same internal battle.

And then one day… something changed. He came across a small puppy wandering the streets.

The dog was in rough shape. Skinny. Covered in dirt. Ribs showing.

It had clearly been neglected… maybe even abused. The dog was scared of everything.

Flinching at movement. Backing away from people. Surviving off scraps.

But for whatever reason… The dog didn’t run from him. And he didn’t walk away from the dog.

Healing Goes Both Ways

He took the dog in. Started feeding it. Caring for it. Protecting it.

Making sure it had a place to sleep. Saving money to get it checked by a vet.

For the first time in a long time… He had responsibility.

He had something depending on him. And slowly…

As the dog began to trust again… As it got stronger…As it started to feel safe…

So did he. You could hear it in his voice. A little more life.

A little more energy. A little more hope. That dog didn’t just need him.

He needed that dog.

When Everything Almost Falls Apart

Months later, he moved back to the U.S. with the dog.

New city. Fresh start. Things were improving.

Until one moment changed everything. He was out walking the dog. Just a normal day.

Then suddenly… The dog spotted a squirrel. And in an instant—it took off.

Straight into the street. Before he could react… Before he could grab the leash…

A car came flying down the road. And it hit the dog. Hard. The sound.

The impact. The helplessness. He ran into the street and dropped to his knees.

The dog was lying there… barely moving… crying out in pain.

Its body broken. Its breathing shallow. The driver didn’t stop.

Just drove away. And in that moment…

Everything he had rebuilt felt like it was being ripped away again.

The Moment That Saved Everything

But then something happened. Another car stopped. A stranger got out.

Didn’t hesitate. Didn’t look around to see if someone else would help.

He just stepped in. He looked at him and said: “I got you.”

They carefully picked the dog up—bloodied, shaking, barely alive—and rushed it into the car.

Drove to one vet. Then another. Finally found someone who could operate.

The dog needed surgery immediately… or it wasn’t going to make it.

And somehow… It pulled through.

Resilience in Real Time

The recovery wasn’t quick. The dog had a broken pelvis. It couldn’t walk properly.

It needed months of care. And he was there for all of it. Every day. Every step.

Helping it heal. And in the process…

Continuing to heal himself.

Why This Matters

As a coach, I think about this a lot. We talk about resilience. We talk about adversity.

We talk about mental toughness. But this is what it looks like in real life.

It’s not clean. It’s not easy. It’s not quick. It’s messy. It’s painful.

And sometimes… it feels like everything is falling apart.

Final Thought

There are moments in life where you’re going to get hit. Hard.

Moments where it feels like everything you’ve built is gone.

Moments where quitting feels like the easiest option.

But the people who come out the other side… Are the ones who stay in the game.

So if you’re going through something right now…

If things feel heavy…

If you feel like you’re on your knees in the middle of the road…

Just remember: You don’t have to fix everything today. You don’t have to have all the answers.

You just have to stay in it. Because sometimes…

The decision to stay in the game…

Is the moment everything starts to change.

If your business needs marketing that works, give us a call. We're here to help!

Have a great day unless you chose otherwise!
