Leadership Built In The Locker Room
When people think about leadership in hockey, they usually picture the obvious things.
The captain wearing the “C.”
The player scoring the big goal.
The coach behind the bench making the call.
And those moments matter.
But if I’m being honest…
Some of the most important lessons I’ve ever learned about leadership didn’t happen on the ice.
They happened in the locker room.
Where Leadership Really Shows Up
The locker room is a different kind of environment.
It’s where you prepare.
It’s where you reset.
It’s where you deal with the highs and the lows.
After a tough loss… you feel it.
Before a big game… you sense the energy building.
And in those moments, when everything is real and there’s nowhere to hide…
That’s where leadership shows up.
And what I learned early on is this:
Leadership isn’t about a title.
It’s about trust.
Leadership Is About Listening
Some of the best leaders I played with weren’t the loudest guys in the room.
They didn’t always jump in to speak first.
They paid attention.
They watched.
They listened.
They noticed when a teammate was off… frustrated… or doubting himself.
And when they did speak…
People listened.
Because their words came from understanding—not ego.
I’ve seen the same thing in business and in coaching.
When people feel heard… they open up.
When they open up… they trust you.
And when there’s trust… that’s when real leadership begins.
Leadership Is About Showing Up
The best leaders weren’t just great in big moments.
They were consistent in the small ones.
They showed up early.
They worked hard.
They did things the right way—every single day.
They didn’t need to talk about standards.
They were the standard.
As a coach, this is something I try to live out.
Because kids don’t just listen to what you say…
They watch what you do.
Especially when things aren’t going your way.
Leadership Is About Lifting Others
I still remember teammates who picked me up after a bad shift.
Who had something positive to say when I needed it.
Who celebrated the small wins.
Those moments stick with you.
Because real leaders don’t just focus on themselves.
They bring others with them.
They make the room better.
They make the team better.
And they make the people around them believe in themselves a little more.
The Leadership That Lasts
As I’ve grown—in hockey, in business, and in life—I’ve realized something deeper.
The best kind of leadership isn’t about being in charge.
It’s about serving.
It’s about putting others first.
It’s about doing the little things that don’t get recognized.
It’s about showing up for people when they need it most.
That’s the kind of leadership that lasts.
A Simple Challenge
If there’s one thing I’ve taken from all those years in the locker room, it’s this:
Leadership is simple—but it’s not easy.
So here’s something to think about this week:
Listen before you speak.
Show up with consistency.
Encourage someone who needs it.
Put someone else ahead of yourself.
Not because you have to…
But because that’s what leaders do.
Final Thought
You don’t need a title to lead.
You don’t need recognition.
You don’t need the spotlight.
You just need to show up…
Earn trust…
And take care of the people around you.
Because in the end…
The best leaders aren’t always the ones out front.
They’re the ones who made everyone else better along the way.
