The Power Principle
A few days ago experienced a power outage.
Within minutes, I was reminded how dependent we are on electricity.
The lights didn't work.
The internet was down.
The things I normally take for granted suddenly became very noticeable.
Then, a few hours later, the power came back on.
Lights came on.
Everything started working again.
Nothing inside those devices had changed.
The difference was simple: The connection had been restored.
That got me thinking. Maybe life works the same way. When we're disconnected, we lose power. When we're connected, we gain power.
I've Seen It in Teams
Having spent most of my life around hockey, I've seen incredibly talented teams accomplish very little because they were disconnected.
Players had individual skill. The coaches had knowledge. Everything looked good on paper.
But something was missing. They weren't connected.
Everyone was pulling in a different direction. I've also been around teams where something special happened.
Players believed in each other. They played for the person beside them.
They trusted their coaches. They shared a common purpose.
They became ONE team.
And when that happens, the power of the group becomes much greater than the talent of the individuals.
That's one of the things I try to teach the young players I coach today.
Hockey isn't just about becoming a better individual player.
It's about learning how to become part of something bigger than yourself. Connection Matters Everywhere
As I've gotten older, I've realized this principle goes far beyond hockey.
It applies to business.
Leadership.
Marriage.
Family.
Friendships.
And faith.
We weren't created to go through life alone. Yet it's incredibly easy to become disconnected.
We get busy. We become distracted.
We spend more time looking at screens and less time looking at each other.
We stop having meaningful conversations.
We stop asking people how they're really doing.
Sometimes we can even be surrounded by people and still feel completely disconnected.
I've learned that when those connections begin to weaken, something inside us often weakens too.
That's why relationships require attention.
Teams require attention.
Families require attention.
Faith requires attention.
Connection doesn't happen by accident.
Plug Back In
There have been seasons throughout my journey when I've tried to carry too much on my own.
Maybe you've experienced that too. You keep pushing. Keep working.
Keep trying to solve everything yourself. Eventually, you realize you need to reconnect.
For me, one of the most important connections has become my relationship with God.
Prayer reconnects me. God's Word grounds me.
My faith reminds me that I don't have to have every answer or carry every burden myself.
I've also learned the importance of staying connected to the people God has placed around me—my family, friends, players, coaches, and people I trust.
Sometimes strength doesn't come from trying harder.
Sometimes strength comes from plugging back in.
Final Thought
Think about the important connections in your life. Your family. Your friendships. Your team. Your faith.
Have any of them become disconnected?
Maybe there is a conversation you've been putting off.
A relationship you've neglected.
A teammate who needs encouragement.
A family member who needs your time.
Or maybe you've become so busy doing life that you've stopped spending time with God.
The good news about a lost connection is that it can often be restored.
Reach out. Have the conversation. Spend the time. Put the phone down.
Listen.
Forgive.
Pray.
Reconnect.
Because one of the greatest lessons I've learned throughout my journey is simple: We are stronger together than we are alone.
And just like that power outage reminded me— When the connection is restored, so is the power.
